This perennial forms a flat mat that covers an area rapidly. It has dark green leaves with clusters of bright flowers that bloom all year. Hybrids will have a little more height, different flower colors and spread more slowly. It is drought tolerant.

The 'Aureum' grows to a size of 6" tall, spreading by underground stolons or rooting in the stems. Its light green leaves are flushed light yellow, and in the summer produces pale pink flowers. This shrubby evergreen perennial reaches a size of 3' tall and 6' wide with narrow, dark foliage and a dense habit. Its flowers always emerge as mauve purple, and are produced on 4' tall stalks. Blooms throughout warm months. Can bloom continuously in mild climates. It should receive sun to part shade, with little or no summer watering. It is hardy to frost.

Phormium 'Radiance' is an evergreen perennial. Big, dramatic plant composed of many swordlike, stiffly vertical leaves in a fan pattern. Flowers stems reach high above leaves, bearing clusters of 1-2 in. blossoms in dull red to yellow. The leaves are variegated yellow and green.
